Our Greatest Fears
I’m not sure our greatest fear is that we will suffer, or even that we will die. I think man’s greatest fear is that he will not have the courage to live — to live fully and all out with no regret. At least that was one of the primary lessons of Israel for me. A man in Jerusalem at a hotel buffet breakfast greeted me with a spectacular smile. “Your first time?” he asked. “How did you know?” I responded curiously. “It’s easy to tell,” he said with a knowing nod. Probably in his early 70’s, this man had lived through the significant history of the Holy Land — for many years through many fears. Before I walked away, he touched my arm tenderly and said, “You know young lady, we do know how to suffer here. I pray we never forget how to see this land with your first-timer’s eyes.” Life, I thought, should be lived to the end with first timer’s eyes.
